I had spent the weekend and following Monday of Labor Day in Marathon getting shallow water spiny... (waiting on pics and will post separate report from the keys) I got back in the office last Wednesday and had a busy week catching up. On Friday, I get the call that the crew is diving on
Saturday... I beg off as I was tried from the keys and had work to do at the house and at the office. (Bad move on my part) Had been hearing the vis sucked since TS Lee, so wasn't too excited to dive on Saturday.

At about 5:30 Saturday afternoon, Mike calls me to brag. They said the vis was bad, but that they had an epic haul. The day started slow with bad vis and no bugs on the first drop. After that, they started to get shovels (30 total), and Greg got a 7lb spiny on one of his drops. At the end of the day, Greg drops on a short tank and shoots the big red grouper, and is not able to look at the area. Jim finds the last tank and back dives Gregs drop. The way I heard it, as Jim is coming up, he has one of the 3 monsters under his arm in a headlock as it would not fit in the bag with the other two monsters. He got the 3 biggest spinys on one drop.

They had a great day and I will be reluctant to ever say no to a dive trip again.
Here are Jims 3

I was looking back at a big spiny Jim got 2 years ago which weighed 11.7 on the scale... looks similar but hard to tell at that size

Nice!

You need to get Mike to join FS Forum so he can make his own posts!

We need some more action around here.

(One of these days I'm going to get to fish again. Between boat being down, two alligator hunts, weather, and engagement, I have done so incredibly little this summer... it's just not right.)

If I thought Mike or Jim would post, I would set up the account for them... He does need to do it as he gets out way more than I can like on weekdays... I am the WW, but I do steal a weekday now and then. Like maybe this Friday

They shoudl have left those spiney's there and entered Schooners thing this weekend.

10 lb lobster might do pretty well.

EDIT: Who's boat? Twin outboards? Looks like the one in the last pick is out of the water... or am I looking at it wrong?

As stated in the text portion of the post :) the last 2 pics were from 2 years ago to compare size on an 11.7 lber that I know cause I weighed it... So those pictures could have been confusing if you didn't read the text. I know I am guilty of doing the same thing on many reports.

As for the Schooners tournament, there are several groups that win every year. We entered a couple of years in a row and decided it was not in the cards. However, I think some of the shovels we have been getting could compete. I think the team just doesn't want to give away their lobsters if they don't think there will be some $ for it.

Oh yeah, the winning spiny each year is about 11-12 pounds... 10 pounders usually come in from 3rd place to 5th place.
